Introduction:
The methodologies of this book cover research
approaches from history of Taoism, iconology, philology, chronology and
typology, etc.. We discuss the Taoist icons
in vertical and horizontal axes about five categories: talisman and talisman
community, incantation, images, Magemarks and true gods. By arranging the
original scriptures and images that are rather crucial in the Taoist cannons,
this book leverages the results of fieldwork and the huge data of Taoist stone
carvings, statues, paintings, art works to analyze deeply the modeling
structure of various types of Taoist image, so that to achieve a better
understanding of the images and thoughts of Taoist images and the impact of
Taoist visual culture on Chinese ethnic nation. This book also aims to provide
us with a far clearer illustration of the bond between Taoist images, Taoist divine hierarchical pedigree and
Taoist art, and it is also able to supply us with explication of the
relationship between afore-mentioned three Taoist productions and Taoist
beliefs, theology and philosophy, in order to benefit contemporary Taoist art
creation.
